WHY DOES MY SHOULDER CLICK POP GRIND?
Hearing a click from your shoulder or any joint for that matter can be a little freaky
but it really is nothing to be alarmed by, it’s pretty harmless,
unless that clicking sound is accompanied by pain swelling or heat
The sound is caused by a change in fluid and gases in and around the joint
WHAT CAUSES A CLICKING SHOULDER?
There are a number of commonly recognised areas of painful clicking from the shoulder.
These include:
1. Glenohumeral joint
2. Subacromial bursa
3. Long head of biceps tendon
4. Scapulo-thoracic articulation
5. Acromioclavicular joint
HOW TO FIX A CLICKING SHOULDER?
Mobility – Stability – Strength
1. Overall Posture
Hunched upper back rolled forward shoulders. An obvious and simple place to start as it is going to have that shoulder in disadvantageous position. Sitting up straight and keeping your posture nice and tall should be the goal. Keeping your thoracic spine or mid back moving well is a good place to start.
Chiropractic adjustments and joint mobilisations to the mid back can help with this but the real magic is the prescribed take home exercises to reinforce this new position. The adjustments will not fix this alone.
2. Mobility of the Scapula (Shoulder Blade)
The scapulae sits on top of the rib cage. For you to get your arm over your head, it must rotate and slide around the rib cage. There are a few areas where it can hitch and the movement can get clunky. There are a few movement assessments and screenings we can do to help identify this.
3. Mobility of the glenohumeral joint
Just like the hip joint the GH joint has a big range of movement. When a joint becomes stiff or stuck or looses any portion of its complete range of motion, there is likely to be a compensation in the nearest joint or muscle.
4. Stability of the shoulder
The way the shoulder sucks into the joint is what we mean by stability. It’s got to be in an ideal position. This is heavily influenced by bony alignment and more importantly the balanced and co-ordinated muscle function of the rotator cuff
5. Strength
Find the position of weakness and strengthen it. Often times humans have really tight upper traps and necks because they are unaware how to connect or have never been shown the correct movement matter (motor control). So long term it’s about strength and movement patterns or you will be likely to reinjure. You keep asking the wrong muscles to do work they are not designed to do. You are increasing injury risk
