Do your knees go snap crackle and pop? Here’s what you need to know
IS A CLICKY KNEE NORMAL?
Yes. Clicking in the knee joint is normal unless it is accompanied by pain, swelling or instability.
Sometimes the knee click is from a bubble of gas called a cavitation being released. Often the clicking noise is simply soft tissue catching and responds very well to soft tissue release and management via scraping/gratson technique, cupping and strengthening exercise.
If the click is accompanied by pain and swelling this will need to be evaluated via imaging likely ultrasound as a first step to see if there is any soft tissue damage that may require surgery.
Another cause for painless popping in the knee is when the ligaments and tendons catch as they go over a bony lump within the knee —or over scar tissue—and pop when they snap back into place.
Meniscus – If the meniscus were damaged the pain would be more likely to come and go, which feels like something is caught in the knee as it moves back and forth.
Chrondomalacia Paetella – pain moving the patella back and forward, and often the pain will be directly behind the knee cap, this is often called runners knee and can be felt usually when you squat and place a hand directly over the knee cap.
Osteoarthritis – Pain would be more persistent; the smooth cartilage has worn down and the bones cause friction when they rub against one another.
Torn cartilage/loose bodies – Plica a thin layer of tissue in the knee can become irritated. A “catching” or “snapping” sensation when bending the knee. Dull knee pain at rest, which increases with activity.
At the time of injury if you heard your knee pop – that is generally not a good sign. Generally, that is going to indicate some ligament damage to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), Medial or Laterally collateral ligaments.
Usually pain swelling and the feeling of the knee giving way underneath you indicate it is unstable.
IS IT ARTHRITIS AND AM I WEARING OUT MY KNEE JOINT?
Arthritic pain is going to feel very persistent often patients will report a response to changes in weather. Cold and wet making them feel worse and hotter warmer weather making their knees feel a bit better.
Keeping your body weight at a healthy weight will help the health of your joints in particularly your knees
